A robust radiation safety culture is the cornerstone of any operation involving ionizing radiation, and the Radiation Safety and Protection Officer is the architect of that culture. This intensive, hands-on course is meticulously designed to equip aspiring and current RSOs with the specialized, practical expertise required to effectively manage radiation safety programs. Participants will master a blend of regulatory knowledge and real-world application, enabling them to build a robust safety culture and mitigate operational risk with confidence and precision.

 

Course Objectives:

 

  • Upon completion of this course, participants will have the knowledge and skills to:

Identify and characterize various types of ionizing radiation and their potential health effects. Apply the fundamental principles of radiation protection (Time, Distance, Shielding) and the ALARA concept in practical scenarios. Develop, implement, and maintain an effective and compliant radiation safety program for their facility. Properly select, use, and calibrate radiation monitoring equipment and instrumentation. Formulate comprehensive emergency response plans for radiation-related incidents. Understand and fulfill the legal and ethical duties of a designated Radiation Safety and Protection Officer.

  • Regulatory & Legal Frameworks: Navigating national and international standards, licensing, and compliance requirements.
  • Practical Protection Strategies: Applying ALARA principles, dosimetry, and personal protective equipment.
  • Instrumentation & Monitoring: Hands-on training with various survey meters and dose rate monitoring devices.
  • Program Management: Developing and documenting a facility-specific Radiation Safety Program.
  • Emergency Preparedness: Procedures for managing spills, equipment failure, and other incidents.
  • The RSO's Role & Responsibilities: Ethical and legal obligations, communication, and training staff.
